Flame She-oak Casuarina inophloia
Doug uses many native timbers but mainly Flame She Oak, which is a small slow growing tree distributed over much of western Queensland. The trunk is seldom more than 15-20cm in diameter and is extremely attractive when used in wood turning because of extensive faulting and cracking. Its timber polishes well and has a wide band of creamy coloured sapwood and a rich red/brown heartwood that is brought alive by long dark flashes in the core.
